Congratulations to Durham Region! International attention has been given to their innovative curbside battery collection program. The Region won two awards of excellence from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) - the Gold Excellence Award in the Special Waste category and the Bronze Excellence Award in the Public Education category.
The battery recycling pilot program was the first of its kind for a Canadian municipality. Durham was able to recover more batteries in the period of one week than they normally do in an entire year. A total of 39 metric tonnes of batteries were diverted from landfill. Well done!
The Region's Battery Recycling Program, called "Batteries Dead? Recycle Instead!" also received a Guiness World Record for most batteries collected in a 24-hour span in the fall of 2012. It's part of the Stewardship Ontario-run/industry-funded program, Orange Drop, which provides Ontarians with a free, safe, and easy way to dispose of household hazardous waste.
