Climate Insight

Helping communities build low-carbon, resilient infrastructure

Climate Insight

In the face of Canada’s escalating climate and housing challenges, communities across Canada need easy access to trustworthy data and climate information. Climate Insight is an online platform designed to meet this need. It provides a centralized source for communities to find the tools and data they need to advance low-carbon, resilient housing and infrastructure initiatives in their communities.

About the platform

Climate Insight is a free online platform that empowers communities across Canada with the data and information needed to build low-carbon, resilient housing and infrastructure. It is designed as the go-to destination to find the relevant, actionable data and information needed to understand climate risks and emissions, support decision-making, and find solutions. Climate Insight is designed to meet the needs of housing and infrastructure professionals, and is a key resource for communities feeling the impacts of aging infrastructure and increasing climate risk. Climate Insight is informed by the needs of housing and infrastructure professionals. With user feedback at the heart of the process, the platform’s functionality, features, and content is continuously being updated to better serve communities as they confront the growing challenges of climate change.

About the Climate Toolkit for Housing and Infrastructure

Climate Insight is part of the Climate Toolkit for Housing and Infrastructure—a suite of free tools, resources, and support services from Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Canada. This toolkit, which comprises Climate Insight, a Climate Help Desk, and the Climate Ready Infrastructure Service, enables communities across Canada to build environmentally friendly, climate-resilient housing and infrastructure.

“You don’t need to be a climate expert to use these tools, you just need to understand your asset or project. The rapid risk assessment will help our teams move through planning more efficiently and identify where to focus time and resources. It also helps spark discussion of climate change early in the project process.”

— Becky Raddatz, Manager, Office of Sustainability, City of Winnipeg

“The new hazard and risk assessment resources from Climate Insight are a game-changer for smaller municipalities like ours. They provide more detail and rigour than other free tools, and are also more accessible than other methodologies that require consultants.”

— Lindsay Hargreaves, Environmental Initiatives Coordinator, City of Brandon

“For our small team, Climate Insight has been invaluable. We need to move fast to make sure climate priorities are included in housing policies and projects. The fact that Climate Insight pulls together vetted national data and practical solutions in one place makes it a lot easier for us to find what we need to do that.”

— Rohan Mishra, Environment & Sustainability Lead, Town of New Glasgow

“The socio-economic mapping with climate projections turns complexity into clarity, showing risks and opportunities side by side. This resource will save time and help municipalities of all sizes make more informed decisions about their infrastructure services. We are already using it in the field and will be sharing it across our asset management network.”

— Matt Delorme, Executive Director, Atlantic Infrastructure Management Network

“The mapping tool makes complex climate data clear and actionable. It helps local governments see where they’re most vulnerable, prioritize actions, and engage their communities with confidence.”

— Trina Innes, Executive Director, Sustainability Services, Alberta Municipalities

“Climate Insight is a great tool to aid in decision making. Having access to tools, project experiences, and a wider base of knowledge helps local Engineers develop solutions to municipal infrastructure climate change challenges.”

– Sean Lee, Assistant Director of Engineering, City of Fredericton

“The library in itself offers so many articles, insights, tools right at my fingertips that will build capacity in my team, since we won’t have to do searches that would take us hours. It is all right there! And knowing that the information has been vetted by ICLEI is a game changer.”

– Jinny Toffelmire, Environment Team Lead, Town of Okotoks

“There is so much great material throughout the platform. We have added Climate Insight as a key resource for our policy planning team.”

– Joad Clement, Municipal Energy Advisor, City of Airdrie.

“The mapping tool is a game-changer for climate action planning. By integrating social vulnerability layers, it goes beyond just identifying risks—it helps prioritize projects where they’re needed most.”

– Sara MacRae, Manager of Climate and Energy, County of Dufferin
