Living With Water Project
Living With Water Project
Developing a toolbox for flood-resistant construction.
With climate change, many regions of Canada will be exposed to a greater risk of flooding, whether coastal, riparian or pluvial. To maintain the safety and well-being of our communities, it is essential to think about new ways of building and living in our homes. The Living With Water project aims to encourage the widespread adoption of building practices that are resilient to all types of flooding. Results will enable the development of training programs adapted to different audiences, as well as decision-support tools to increase the resilience of homes to the hazards of flooding. These programs and tools will help make homes across the country less vulnerable to flood damage, thereby increasing residents’ safety, reducing property and structural damage, and minimizing post-flood repair costs and efforts.
Project Team
A partnership to help citizens protect their properties against flooding.
This project is led by Architecture Sans Frontières Québec (ASFQ), in collaboration with the Cité-ID Living Lab of the École nationale d’administration publique, and is being carried out with the support of EcoHabitation, the Université de Sherbrooke, the National Research Council of Canada, the Institut national de recherche scientifique, ICLEI Canada, and the cities of Longueuil, Montreal, Laval and Quebec.
ICLEI Canada is contributing to this project by developing tools that will help municipalities better communicate the benefits of flood-resilient building practices, as well as support their citizens who decide to undertake this type of construction and renovation.
This project is financed as part of the Building for the Future cycle of the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation Housing Supply Challenge, and benefits from the collaboration of the Quebec government, thanks to the participation of the Ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs, the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation, the Société québécoise des infrastructures and the Société d’habitation du Québec.
