Biodiversity
Creating communities full of lifeWhen we consider all the benefits that urban biodiversity provides to our day-to-day lives, it is clear that nature plays a fundamental role in supporting all elements of a sustainable city. Healthy biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural assets are essential for building resilience to climate hazards and meeting climate goals. They also provide important environmental, economic, and social benefits that are increasingly being recognized by communities across Canada and the world.
Communities are joining the growing movement to bring nature back into cities and integrate natural systems and services into the urban landscape through plans, policies and action.
Biodiversity Action Plans
If you are looking to take action on biodiversity in your community, then creating a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) is the way to start. The biodiverCities handbook is designed to guide municipalities through this process. It provides straightforward guidance using a milestone framework to identify opportunities to improve community biodiversity, sustainability, and resilience. You can use the handbook on your own or work through it with support from ICLEI Canada. Reach out to us to discuss support options.
Tools and Resources
Capacity building is at the core of ICLEI’s biodiversity work. We empower local governments with the knowledge, tools and resources they need to integrate biodiversity management into their policies, plans and programs. Explore our biodiversity resources to find frameworks, case studies, webinars, presentations, and informational packages.
International Action
Biodiversity isn’t just a priority of local governments in Canada—communities around the world are working to achieve biodiversity goals. Through our global network, we connect Canadian communities to leading work on local government biodiversity action across the world and internationally recognized resources. We work with colleagues at the ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center and in partnership with Cities with Nature to support, strengthen, and align local action here in Canada. ICLEI’s global efforts also amplify the many voices of local governments at international platforms such as Biodiversity COPs.
