Climate-Related Financial Disclosures Guide

A Resource From the Municipal Net‑zero Action Research Partnership

Climate-Related Financial Disclosures Guide

Learn how to incorporate the impacts of climate risks and opportunities in financial reports to create transparency and accountability.

By including the impacts of climate risks and opportunities in financial reports, an increasing number of Canadian municipalities are creating transparency and driving accountability at the pace and scale needed to confront the climate crisis. These are called climate-related financial disclosures—and they’ve become a key part of local governance and strategic decision-making. The newest resource from the Municipal Net-Zero Action Research Partnership (N-ZAP) was created to help Canadian municipalities as they navigate this emerging strategy.

The Climate-Related Financial Disclosures Guide was created to support Canadian municipalities and local governments in their climate-related financial disclosures journey. It identifies key steps in the process, current and promising practices in this emerging area, and resources that can be leveraged to make climate-related financial disclosure easier, more efficient, and more effective. It is divided into four main sections:

  1. Climate-related financial disclosures overview defines climate-related financial disclosures within the context of this guide and outlines the business case for local governments.
  2. The current landscape provides an overview of Canadian and international progress on climate-related financial disclosures and summarizes key takeaways from the research, focus groups, and interviews.
  3. How to implement walks through the main steps in establishing climate-related financial disclosures, with a particular emphasis on priorities within each of the four pillars. Each section includes learnings from leading jurisdictions and provides examples and resources.
  4. Future directions discusses plans for the next phase of climate-related financial disclosures in key organizations, as well as the resources needed to adopt climate-related financial disclosures and integrate them into more Canadian jurisdictions.

This guide relates specifically to the work conducted by Technical Working Group 3 to enhance Canadian municipal emissions monitoring and disclosure tools.
