What We Do
Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time. Communities across the country continue to experience the effects of a changing climate, from increased flooding to longer and more extreme heat waves to advancing invasive species and vector borne diseases. Cities have a key role to play in mitigating the causes of and adapting their communities to the effects of a changing climate. As the level of government closest to residents, municipalities are well-positioned to develop effective strategies to protect the health of people and the livability of communities.
At ICLEI, a main priority is to engage and support communities preparing for climate change. With our Building Adaptive & Resilient Communities (BARC) suite of solutions, we help communities by providing an array of tools, resources, and consulting services to increase their adaptive capacity in a cost-effective and accessible way. The components of BARC range from networking platforms, to online tools to a full BARC Program; regardless of the BARC pathway your community chooses, ICLEI can help your community become more adaptive and resilient.
Damage to infrastructure resulting from floods, droughts, and intense storms, is just one of the impacts of extreme weather that municipalities across the country are facing more frequently. The BARC Program offers a comprehensive way to respond to the impacts of climate change and protect the people, property, and prosperity of your community.BARC Program

BARC Research helps move the field of municipal adaptation and resilience further and connect cities to this research.BARC Research
BARC resources help communities respond to and prepare for the impacts of climate change. These resources range from presentations, to case studies, to online publications, to hardcopy manuals and handbooks.BARC Resources
