Climate Communications Toolkit
Climate Communications Toolkit
Whether raising awareness about impacts, assessing risks and vulnerabilities, or implementing actions, the way we have climate conversations is key to inspiring action within our communities. The Climate Communications Toolkit is designed for local practitioners and community leaders looking to use communications to support the implementation of climate action and build better, more resilient communities. More specifically, it reflects the reality that it is not enough for people to know about climate change—they need to be inspired and motivated to take action. The toolkit provides practical strategies, resources, and training opportunities needed to incorporate behavioural insights into climate communications and drive action.
Toolkit Resources
Climate Communications Playbook
Climate Communications Playbook: Behavioural Strategies for Community Action introduces actionable approaches and strategies for creating action-oriented communications campaigns that incorporate behavioural science insights.
Climate Communications Case Stories
A series of case stories have been compiled to exemplify how the behavioural communications strategies presented in Climate Communications Playbook: Behavioural Strategies for Community Action can be used to support climate action.
Additional Resources
The strategies, resources, and training in the Climate Communications Toolkit are meant to serve as a practical starting point for integrating behavioural insights into climate communications. For those wishing to dive deeper, we recommend exploring the following resources. We also encourage you to seek locally relevant resources—such as citizen surveys, climate plans, and other strategic documents—to ground your climate communications with community-specific information, perspectives, and priorities. You may find these types of local resources by connecting with municipal offices, First Nations, health units, and community groups.
Communicating Climate Data Differently
How can we get valuable climate data into the hands of decision-makers? We collaborated with the ClimateData.ca team on an article that transforms numbers and projections into a valuable resource to support the production of maple syrup in a changing climate. Learn how we did this and how you can use a similar approach to communicate climate data differently.
Do Climate Communications Differently Webinar
The way we talk about climate action matters—especially if we want to motivate people with different backgrounds, values, and priorities to get involved. Watch this webinar replay from April 16, 2025 to learn how to move away from traditional climate communications, use research findings to frame climate messages, incorporate insights and behavioural strategies in the roll-out of climate initiatives, and see how abstract concepts and data can be transformed into relatable narratives.
